Netzwerk-Virtualisierung als ein Schlüsselfaktor für eine agile Multi-Cloud-Strategie

Jedes Unternehmen, egal in welcher Branche, ist bestrebt, flexibel auf Marktanforderungen reagieren zu können und so wettbewerbsfähiger zu werden. Dass dies am besten mit einer agilen IT-Infrastruktur im Rahmen einer Cloud Computing-Strategie zu erreichen ist, haben die meisten verinnerlicht. Dass sie sich andererseits nicht tagtäglich mit der Cloud und deren Betriebsmodellen beschäftigen wollen oder können, ist ebenso verständlich wie nachvollziehbar. Die IT soll einfach funktionieren – und Hand in Hand mit den Geschäftszielen arbeiten. Um dies zu erreichen, muss die Cloud-Umgebung entsprechend der Business-Anforderungen gestaltet werden und idealerweise erfahrene IT-Berater mit ins Boot geholt werden, die einen Business Cloud Alignment Ansatz verfolgen.

Das Hauptproblem, das wir nach wie vor bei unseren Kunden feststellen, ist, dass die Geschwindigkeit, in der sich das Business entwickelt, nicht mit der der IT im Einklang ist. Das Business ist meist um einiges voraus, was in der heutigen Zeit nicht der Fall sein dürfte. Im Gegenteil: Die IT sollte nicht nur gleichauf mit dem Business, sie sollte idealerweise sogar eine Nasenlänge voraus sein.

Große, europäische Bank als prägnantes Beispiel

Einer unserer Partner aus dem VMware Cloud Partner Netzwerk, ein führender Datacenter und Service Provider in Europa, war in dieses Projekt involviert. Dabei ging es darum, die Bank, deren IT-Abläufe über einen Wirrwarr von Cloud-Umgebungen abgewickelt wurden, agiler zu machen. Durch eine Vielzahl von Standardisierungsmaßnahmen, bei denen einzelne Dokumenten-basierte Arbeitsabläufe manuell vorgenommen werden mussten, liefen die Prozesse in der Bank recht langsam ab. Das IT-Team musste sage und schreibe 63 einzelne Schritte vollziehen und dabei außerdem die Security und Compliance Policies überprüfen. Das war alles sehr langwierig und unbefriedigend für alle Beteiligten.

Unser Partner half schließlich, diesem Wirrwarr zu entkommen und brachte mit der VMware CrossCloud-Architektur Licht ins Dunkel: Der VMware Multi-Cloud-Ansatz bedeutet, dass unsere Kunden zahlreiche Anwendungen und Umgebungen entweder im eigenen Rechenzentrum, bei Partnern oder in einer gemischten Umgebung einheitlich betreiben, zentral verwalten und managen können. Der oft genannte „Pferdefuß”Security lässt sich dadurch umgehen, indem sich Netzwerk- und Security-Services standardisieren und automatisieren lassen. Und das geht – über alle Clouds hinweg – mittels VMware NSX.

Wie das funktioniert? Indem NSX Sicherheitsfunktionen direkt in den Hypervisor integriert. NSX ermöglicht Mikrosegmentierung und detaillierte Sicherheit für einzelne Workloads und schafft so ein wesentlich höheres Maß an Sicherheit im Rechenzentrum. Sicherheitsrichtlinien bleiben an die Workloads gebunden, egal wo sich die Workloads in der Netzwerktopologie befinden.

Das wird dadurch möglich, indem NSX Netzwerkfunktionen von der zugrunde liegenden Hardware abstrahiert und Netzwerkfunktionen und Sicherheitsrichtlinien mit ihren jeweiligen Workloads verknüpft. So können sich Anwendungen und Daten überall befinden und überall zugänglich sein – in der eigenen „privaten” Cloud, in einer Cloud eines Service Providers oder in einer hybriden Umgebung. Die Workloads lassen sich jederzeit problemlos von einem Rechenzentrum in ein anderes verschieben.

Was das für die europäische Bank bedeutet?

Nachdem unser Service Partner die Netzwerk-Virtualisierung erfolgreich eingeführt, Arbeitsschritte standardisiert und automatisiert hat, konnten deren Anwendungen in einer gemeinsamen Betriebsumgebung Cloud- und Geräte-übergreifend vernetzt, abgesichert, ausgeführt und verwaltet werden. Einzelne „Cloud-Silos” gibt es nicht mehr. Stattdessen freut sich die IT-Organisation nun über eine gemeinsame Betriebsumgebung, die die nötige Transparenz und die erforderlichen Tools zur Cloud-übergreifenden Visualisierung und Verwaltung von Ressourcen, Workloads und Betriebsabläufen beinhaltet.

Schlussendlich können dadurch neu benötigte Ressourcen innerhalb einer halben Stunde – statt wie früher innerhalb von Tagen – bereitgestellt und umgehend auf die Belange der Kunden eingegangen werden. NSX ist der beste Weg, Agilität zu garantieren, ohne Abstriche bei der Sicherheit in Kauf nehmen zu müssen.

Tailored to industry: A sector-based approach

We need hosted, private and public clouds. After all, you can&#rsquo;t paint a painting with a single colour. We don&#rsquo;t need to be a specialist in a vertical market - we are industry agnostic – but we are fully aligned, knowledgeable and skilled in industry trends and compliance. We adapt to make our services right for a customer. That&#rsquo;s what our expertise is – and it&#rsquo;s leveraged with our partnership with VMware.

We have a joint alignment with VMware, sharing common interests and goals through an outstanding relationship. One of our biggest success stories in that field has been with OVH Healthcare. With OVH Healthcare, we host the information systems of healthcare organisations in an environment that meets even the most demanding industry regulations and compliance laws. We then provide an expert team of data hosting and medical specialists to help the organisation choose the private cloud environment best befitting of their needs. As ever, OVH has worked alongside VMware to create the different environments, but all are based on vCenter, vSphere, NSX and vRealize Operations. Customers can create their VMs from the vSphere interface and can configure access rules to their networks through NSX while using vRealize Operations to control and manage their infrastructure.

We actually developed the solution in line with French start-up Betterise Health Tech. The company was looking for a solution to support its mobile applications for diabetic patients, but when it wanted to extend its product range, offering mobile apps for diabetic patients, for example, it was faced with a legal constraint – it needed a licensed HDS host. It wanted to make use of our private cloud with VMware, so we designed OVH Healthcare and obtained HDS accreditation in November 2016. As French regulations are among the most protective of personal data, they often serve as a model in Europe. This shows just how secure our solution with VMware must be.

This is just one example. We&#rsquo;re looking forward to continuing on our journey with VMware to help support other organisations achieve the flexibility of the cloud with solutions dedicated to meeting the specific requirements of their sectors.

For us, that includes, but isn&#rsquo;t limited to: helping clients to invest in cloud services without worrying about being locked-in, managing sovereignty needs, scaling within private cloud, and managing the mix between legacy and new cloud services.
