Helping turn blue sky dreams into a reality

As part of an interview series with our partner community, we spoke with the CEO of iSanity in South Africa, Annelee Le Grange, about being part of vCAN (the VMware vCloud Air Network), and running its whole offering on VMware NSX.

It&#rsquo;s easy for businesses to fall into the trap of thinking they need every piece of new technology possible to keep up with their competitors, whether that&#rsquo;s IoT, hybrid cloud, big data or a number of other technologies. But they must walk before they can run.

The foundation - or the IT backbone – must run smoothly and perfectly support the business infrastructure basics, before any of the blue sky dreams can become a reality. Our clients can dream and we will help make their projects a reality. This is certainly the approach that we took when we looked at how we could provide our clients with the right solutions.

Services over tech

People buy tailored solutions and services from us – not technology! We work with our clients to identify what they want to achieve and propose solutions to meet their requirements.

That&#rsquo;s why the technology has to be right from the get go. VMware is the platform from which we have built and delivered all our cloud services. The technology ticked all the boxes and provided us with the flexibility we required. We did not shop around and did not look at anything else. We believe that our investment in VMWare was the start of a partnership for us that delivered the results and support that we wanted

Going forward, we want to scale up our services further, and it should be no surprise that all of these future services will be delivered on the VMware platform.

What we had to consider

We needed scalable architecture that could deliver supplementary cloud services to enterprises of all sizes in South Africa. VMware&#rsquo;s Cross-Cloud Architecture provided us with a software platform that could support a secure multi-tenant, self-service cloud environment for the customer.

The flexible licensing model and consumptive nature of vCAN offered us the perfect solution from which to build a Greenfields site from the ground up. It meant we could offer our clients cloud real estate, but also provide us with a platform to deliver robust cloud services with full management capabilities using vCloud Director, VMware’s management tool for private and hybrid cloud architectures, and NSX, VMware&#rsquo;s virtual networking and security software product.

Our approach was always to lead with security, and with NSX it was easy to deploy virtual machines while also including McAfee which we could integrate seamlessly.

VMware essentially took the risk out of building the environment and delivery of services. This was very important as we wanted to give our clients the peace of mind that their data is secure and looked after, so they can concentrate on what&#rsquo;s most important to them: their business.

We also had to think about performance and scalability – both of which we get from VMware. Complete integration with Cisco UCS means it&#rsquo;s highly scalable, while NSX has given us complete flexibility to enable companies to pay for what is essentially an empty data centre on a &#lsquo;pay as you grow&#rsquo; model.

Bonus benefits

The huge benefit for us is the multi-cloud story. Our clients have big ambitions, and we need to provide them with the reliability and flexibility they need no matter what. To be able to provide our clients with that kind of reassurance is imperative. We&#rsquo;ve also been able to seamlessly integrate the VMware environment with other vendors. Combining these altogether has given us a software-defined data centre in essence to manage.

There is also an element of reassurance we can offer clients that are reluctant to go into the public cloud – which is exactly what we are. From a compliance perspective, with incoming regulations like POPI coming down the line, coupled with compliance expected from the current ECT ACT, etc., we are well prepared as we can provide customers cloud that supports multi-tenancy and micro-segmentation with NSX, giving them a fully secure environment.

We have managed massive savings on capex thanks to being able to report on what we use. The environment has also given us international exposure - including through AWS via the portal. Furthermore, the platform itself is exceptionally green and only uses 3.5kw of power per hour.

Pay it forward

Just as VMware is helping us to look at innovative new technologies, and be geared towards a software-defined and cloudy future, our customers can achieve their dreams too. We want them to be aspirational for the blue skies of tomorrow. We want them to be able to reap the rewards of all the new technologies, and we&#rsquo;ll give them the tools to make it happen.

How a virtual storage solution helped to address the challenges of a leading retailer

As one of Denmark&#rsquo;s leading retailers, Coop needed to ensure the best customer service at all times – and that requires keeping the infrastructure up and running continuously.

In this guest blog from our partner Atea, who worked closely with Coop on the project, they talk about the challenges the supermarket faced – and why a virtual storage solution with vSAN helped to address these.ATEAjust won both the EMEA and global 2016 Partner Innovation Award in the Digital Workspace area at our Partner Leadership Summit.

How to create a digital business supported with the right technology?
That&#rsquo;s one of the most common conversations we have with our customers at Atea. We&#rsquo;re finding most business leaders understand the need for evolved infrastructures that can support agility and help them remain competitive, but it&#rsquo;s in the low-margin retail space we&#rsquo;re especially seeing calls for achieving this with the lowest possible cost.

So how can retailers create an environment that will help them move fast, but won&#rsquo;t have an impact on those profit margins?
Let me talk to you about our work in the space with Coop Denmark, a customer of ours for the past five years.

Coop had to find innovative ways of ensuring it can cut costs while delivering great customer experience. Achieving this in a highly-saturated retail market is no mean feat, especially when you consider the fact that it needs to tackle an increasingly complex range of systems, applications and processes that require a strong, resilient infrastructure – all the way from stock control and POS terminals to supply chain integration.

For years, Coop had to rely on infrastructure that enables its systems to work all of the time. After all, if just one of its 5,100 point of sale (POS) terminals in one of its 1,200 stores goes down, not only does the company risk losing money, it can also suffer reputational damage which can affect customer loyalty in the long-term. Stopping a customer from buying their essentials just once can prevent Coop from making money from that customer ever again.

For Coop, the challenge to ensure ongoing business continuity grew exponentially as the retailer expanded and it soon became apparent that it needed more storage to ensure it would always be &#lsquo;on&#rsquo;. One solution to this was to enable expansion by repeatedly building virtual machines on top of physical infrastructure – but this meant that its estate was tough to manage and hard to control because a lack of visibility. It was also a more expensive method of expanding storage.

A helping hand
It was clear to Coop that a new way of thinking was required when it came to managing its storage - and it was at this point they came to us at Atea for a solution. Our early conversations with Coop taught us that it didn&#rsquo;t just want a solution to fix IT system crashes in-store, instead, it wanted a solution that ensures stability all of the time – thus reducing the need to fix IT issues. We needed to offer a proactive rather than a reactive solution.

Once we were on board, we quickly suggested that Coop build its datacentre on a virtual storage solution with VMware vSAN. With the help of VMware we were able to show how a software-defined approach to storage would help to create a more agile, secure and more reliable business – all while saving money.

A project of this scale can at times feel daunting to many but we always work as closely with VMware as possible to ensure a streamlined process. VMware worked on the design, while we handled the implementation. This was our first experience of deploying vSAN at that capacity, performance and scale – and it was a huge success.

Simplified datacentre
One of the key vSAN features Coop wanted to exploit was failure domains; the ability multiple data centres where if one site ever goes down, a second can carry on completely uninterrupted while intelligently creating and keeping a back-up of data. This would have been incredibly difficult to do with a legacy storage vendor and could have caused a lot of business disruption. Instead, Coop now can ensure that in the rare instance that one of its data centres does down, its systems will remain active – meaning that transactions can be processed and that customers are left satisfied with the customer service they&#rsquo;ve received.

Atea is proud to have helped Coop to have moved towards software-defined storage that underpins every business process - all the way from the tills in the stores, through to the provisioning of goods from the warehouses and ultimately the customer experience.

Rakuten Group:

A Balancing Act: Can Cloud Support Innovation in Education as well as IT Control?

We spoke to George Wraith, Head of ICT at New College Durham, on how technology is playing a crucial role in enabling a stimulating teaching environment with the most up to date learning resources.

Until seven years ago, most of the education sector pursued a centralized IT strategy – and our college was no different. The key driver was costs. This approach allowed us to manage and control the costs of people, equipment, set-up and management from one place.

Around 2010, the emergence of mobile technologies triggered a gradual but notable shift to an increasingly decentralized approach. Students began using their own laptops and teachers began using Internet-based teaching resources. New College Durham embraced the adoption of mobility on campus. The IT team set up the systems, specified the devices and then passed it on to the college staff to manage.

Since then, various departments at our college have directly purchased applications or cloud-based systems to improve the quality of teaching. But this can present challenges for the IT department. Sometimes we&#rsquo;re by-passed until the point of system implementation or involved only when there&#rsquo;s a problem that needs fixing. It&#rsquo;s an unexpected drain on our IT resources and results in cost and management inefficiencies.

But it&#rsquo;s not just about resources. Data protection must be a key consideration when any cloud-based applications are evaluated for use at the college. We are bound by strict data protection regulations and we have a governance team to ensure compliance. For example, all personal data must reside in the UK – this clearly impacts on the suitability of different cloud services for some applications.

Of course, used in the right way, the cloud offers our college a valuable, complementary resource to our existing IT infrastructure. Our students use Office 365 and benefit greatly from our VLE (virtual learning environment), a cloud-based system that allows teachers to share educational materials with students. Some of our corporate systems are cloud-based and our disaster recovery set-up relies on VMware vCloud Air.

I believe that cloud services will gain in popularity throughout the education sector, but we need to find the right balance between innovation for college departments and control for the IT team. That&#rsquo;s why the Cross-Cloud Architecture announcement from VMware is so important – it&#rsquo;s designed to give organizations the freedom to innovate while maintaining control.
