New Research: Top 10 Identity and Access Management Challenges

As organizations undergo digital transformation, they experience challenges along the way. This is due to the fact that this transformation often requires them to update and/or replace legacy solutions. They also have to implement new ways of securing access from the plethora of devices out there.

We recently fielded a research studywith several hundred respondents worldwide to better understand the top identity and access management challenges that customers are facing.

Below are my top three takeaways from the VMware survey:

Takeaway #1: Most organizations allow end users to access corporate resources other than email from a personal device.

Email is often the first app that many of us think about accessing from our personal devices, but the reality is that we need more than that. The research shows that end users also need access to files and internal websites in order to be productive.

IT professionals should be concerned about the risk of data leakage from users accessing confidential information, whether it be on a file share, Microsoft SharePoint or from internal websites. Since personal devices are often not under management by IT, there is a risk that confidential company information can be copied to personal file services.

Takeway #2: BYO is a critical initiative for the majority of organizations.

The majority of organizations have either already developed a bring-your-own (BYO) policy or are in the process of developing one. The reasons for this are clear. Most of us don&#rsquo;t want to go back to the old days, when we could only do work on a corporate device. We want to be able to work anywhere, on any device.

End users also want choice—the choice to pick the device that reflects their work style and personality. Supporting BYO enables organizations to modernize with a flexible, user-friendly approach.

While supporting BYO is user-friendly, organizations need to have a policy that ensures that only the right access is delivered to the right people, on the right device. As we saw in Takeaway #1, most users are doing more than accessing email on their personal devices. It&#rsquo;s not enough to just have a policy—organizations must have the tools in order enable access from any device without compromising IT security.

Takeway #3: Password management is the top identity and access management challenge.

We&#rsquo;ve all been there before. We waited too long, and our password expired. Or we made a change, and somehow that change didn&#rsquo;t trickle down to all of the various systems we need to access.

Password creation, update and deletion (CRUD) is a real issue with real costs that IT wants to reduce. According to various analysts, password resets handled by the help desk can cost up to $70, and unfortunately for the help desk, a significant percentage of help desk calls have to do with passwords.

IT must look at ways to reduce the impact of password CRUD issues in their organization. This is why it&#rsquo;s so important to have solutions in place that eliminate the help desk call—the main source of cost in the equation. Having self-service tools that are easy to use and integrate with existing systems can alleviate much of the pain here.

How mobile innovation continues to improve customer experience

In the lead up to Mobile World Congress, we&#rsquo;ve been thinking about the impact mobile has had on two of the most important sectors that affect the majority of us in our day to day lives: health and financial services.

Organisations in both industries are attempting to embrace mobile technologies to improve the way people interact with them. For the healthcare sector, the technology is being introduced to offset dwindling budgets and pressures to reduce costs while improving patient care. For the financial services sector, mobile innovation is being used to give companies a competitive edge by offering better customer experience.

Exploring the mobile influence

Mobile has completely transformed these sectors. In healthcare, organisations can now capture patient data such as calories consumed, fitness regimes, blood pressure readings, weight and pulses. Wearables have enabled people to track their heart rate, step count and sleep patterns. Interaction has also been improved through video consultations and apps are helping people self-diagnose without the need to visit a doctor.

In the financial services sector, mobile apps are driving consumers away from the traditional high-street bank. Customers can now access and manage their bank account on a smartphone or tablet, while consumers can pay using their mobiles thanks to NFC technology.

But this is just the beginning. Machine learning and data analytics can be used to detect health patterns and predict pandemics from the mobile data before they occur, and artificial intelligence and robotics are the next step in being able to act on some of these big data findings.

Meanwhile, mobile apps are helping cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin go mainstream, and new players, such as Monzo are finding new ways to deliver almost every type of financial service – from peer to peer lending, to digital and contactless payments, to personal trading platforms and beyond.

Challenging circumstances

Although mobile innovation provides an opportunity to improve, there are challenges. Security is one of the key issues here: both health and financial data is valuable and therefore vulnerable to hackers. Organisations within the sector must ensure they invest in the right technology to manage the risk – for example VMware NSX and AirWatch.

Concluding thoughts

The most important aspect for organisations to remember is the need to improve the customer experience – whether it&#rsquo;s a patient or a consumer. Mobile innovation continues to enable business leaders to be able to do this, but they need to work towards a clear strategy, and with the right partners to implement secure platforms.

Why there’s more to a digital workplace than shiny new gadgets

What&#rsquo;s not to like about a digital workplace? Shiny new gadgets and new ways of working can boost employee morale and help to attract and retain staff.

The likes of video conferencing, enterprise social media solutions, and instant messaging can encourage collaboration amongst employees, which in turn improves productivity. But the benefits of a digital workplace stretch far wider than this – as we found in our State of Digital Workplace report, which surveyed 1,200 business and IT decision makers globally. More than half of our respondents that have transformed their digital workspaces could see improvements in mobile workforce effectiveness, user access in mission-critical applications, and in user satisfaction with IT.

With meticulous planning, and a consideration of people, processes and technology, the hard work can pay off.

On the flip side, there are many organisations whereby changes are made just for the sake of change. The mentality of &#lsquo;every other organisation is doing it, so why aren&#rsquo;t we?&#rsquo; will prove costly in the long run however, especially as there are major business benefits to be made if a digital workplace is implemented properly.

Changing can be an obstacle course
Like most programmes for change that involve technology, a big obstacle to adoption is security. Digital workplaces are no different – 43% of EMEA business and IT leaders cited security concerns as the top barrier – but remarkably, nearly half of the decision makers in EMEA view a digital workplace as a way to address compliance and security risk. This is through the use of security and compliance software management tools for devices, the workplace and identity.

Meanwhile, the second biggest barrier in EMEA is budgetary constraints. And yet, 52 per cent of decision makers in EMEA saw cost improvements as a result of successfully completing a digital workplace-related project. The return on investment (ROI) was driven by a combination of factors including the faster release of applications, and increased security of desktops. So organisations can invest in many solutions that they will see a ROI on.

The business benefits aren&#rsquo;t restricted to ROI however, with 51% of EMEA businesses that have successfully executed digital workplace initiatives seeing improvements in their ability to bring new revenue streams online, compared to 34% of EMEA businesses that hadn&#rsquo;t successfully executed digital workplace initiatives This shows that organisations that invest in a digital workplace stand to gain a competitive edge against their business rivals.

The fears that business and IT leaders have about their budget and security when thinking about a digital workplace initiative are misplaced. In fact, both areas are an incentive to push forward with a digital workplace project.

It&#rsquo;s not just about new shiny gadgets – there are real business benefits to be gained, and those firms that don&#rsquo;t act now may struggle to keep pace with their competition.
